Efficiency has become more than a trend, soon it will be mandated. Your transformer design may be out of date come 2016.

DOE published a final rule prescribing new energy conservation standards for external power supplies. 79 FR 7845 (February 10, 2014). This new standard applies to all direct operation External Power Supplies and includes, in addition to Class A power supplies previously covered by 2007 standards, power supplies that have not previously been subject to DOE regulations, such as multiple-voltage EPSs, EPSs with nameplate output power greater than 250 watts, and some EPSs that charge the battery of a product that is fully or primarily motor operated. For more information, please see the EPS energy conservation standards rulemaking page.

Summary of 2014-02-10 Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for External Power Supplies; Final Rule:

Pursuant to the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 (EPCA), as amended, today's final rule amends the energy conservation standards that currently apply to certain external power supplies and establishes new energy conservation standards for other external power supplies that are currently not required to meet such standards. Through its analysis, DOE has determined that these changes satisfy EPCA's requirements that any new and amended energy conservation standards for these products result in the significant conservation of energy and be both technologically feasible and economically justified.

Whether you are immediately effected by these new restrictions or not, it is time to look at the efficiency of your transformers. Galaxy has made a point of focusing on developing our toroidal  department to extend our capabilities, offer the best pricing, and assist our customers with these new efficiency demands. Galaxy Transformers has over 200 toroidal winders in our factories overseas. Not only do we have the winders, we also have machinery to produce tape wound cores from raw material. Many, if not most, toroid manufacturers must purchase the cores from their suppliers. Galaxy eliminates these added costs by creating the cores themselves in house.

Toroidal transformers will improve efficiency by 10-20% compared to traditional EI Transformers. Contact Galaxy Transformers to see how we can help improve the efficiency of your power needs.
